Who runs this site

SaaS Burn Calculator is run by Michael Lo, an individual based in the United States, who decides what this site measures and is responsible for it (the “controller” under data protection law). Contact: privacy@michaello.ai.

Page views

We count page views with Umami Cloud, an analytics service run by Umami Software, Inc., which stores our analytics data in the United States. Your browser loads Umami's script and talks to Umami directly. For each page you open, the script sends:

  • the page address, without anything after the “?”
  • the page title
  • the page that linked you here, also without anything after the “?”
  • your screen size
  • your browser's language setting

The script sets no cookies and writes nothing to your browser. To send the details above, it reads your screen size and language from your browser, and it checks one setting in your browser's storage (umami.disabled) to see whether you've opted out.

Because your browser connects to Umami, Umami receives your IP address and your browser's User-Agent (a line your browser sends that names the browser, its version and your operating system). From these and your screen size, Umami works out your browser, operating system and device type. Umami says it uses the IP address to estimate your country, region and city and to make a scrambled visitor ID (a hash) that starts over each month, and that it doesn't store the IP address with the analytics data.

The calculator keeps your inputs in the page address after the “?”. The script leaves that part out, so typing into the calculator sends nothing to Umami.

Clicks to vendors

Every button to a vendor goes through our own short redirect (see how we make money). When you click one, our server records:

  • which tool you clicked through to
  • which of our pages the button was on
  • which button on that page it was
  • whether that tool came out cheaper at your inputs
  • the usage volume you had set in the calculator, if any

Our server writes these details as one line in our host's logs. Vercel's record of the same request also holds your IP address, your User-Agent and the link you clicked (see “Our host”).

Our server also sends these details to Umami with your User-Agent, which Umami needs to accept the event. It never passes on your IP address or any cookie, so Umami sees our server's address instead of yours, and the click carries no ID that links it to your page views.

Our host

The site runs on Vercel, Inc., in the United States. Vercel records technical details of each request, such as the full page address (including anything after the “?”), your User-Agent and your IP address. So if you open a link that includes calculator inputs, or click through to a vendor, those details reach Vercel's logs. We can see these logs for 1 day.

What vendors learn from our links

Our redirect adds these tags to the vendor's address so the vendor can see the visit came from us:

  • utm_source: this site's name
  • utm_medium: “calculator”
  • utm_campaign: which of our pages and buttons you came from

The usage volume you set stays with us; the vendor doesn't get it from our link. A referral link also carries our referral ID, so the vendor or its affiliate network can tell you came from us. Once you land on a vendor's site, its own privacy policy and cookies apply.

If you email us

Your address and message are stored in our Google Workspace mailbox, and we keep them as long as we need to answer you.

How long we keep it

  • Umami keeps our analytics data for 6 months.
  • We can see our host's logs for 1 day.
  • Umami and Vercel also keep their own security and operations logs and backups, which may include your IP address. We couldn't find how long either of them keeps these.

Why we can do this

Where data protection law such as the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we rely on our legitimate interests (GDPR Art. 6(1)(f)): knowing which pages are useful, checking that our buttons send people to the cheaper tool as we promise, getting credit from vendors for referrals, and keeping the site running and secure. We've weighed these against your privacy: our pages and our analytics set no cookies, our analytics don't store your IP address, and you can object at any time.

We don't sell or rent the analytics or logs described here, and we don't use them to target ads. We do earn referral fees from some vendors; the only details our links add for a vendor are listed above. We don't make automated decisions about you.

Your choices and rights

You can object at any time to our page-view and click measurement by writing to privacy@michaello.ai. You don't have to give us anything to use this site, and it works the same with a content blocker.

If your browser sends a Do Not Track signal, the script doesn't send page views to Umami and our server doesn't send your clicks to Umami. Your browser still downloads the script from Umami, and our host still logs each request as described above.

If the GDPR or UK GDPR applies to you, you can ask for access to, correction or deletion of data about you, ask us to restrict how we use it, and object to it. We have no accounts and our analytics don't store your IP address, so we usually can't pick out records that belong to you. If you tell us details that point to them, such as the time of a visit and your browser, we'll look. We reply within one month.

You can also complain to a data protection authority, for example where you live or work. In the UK that is the ICO; the European Data Protection Board lists each EU country's authority.
